Art and Dementia

I have a passionate belief that everyone has the ability to be creative, no matter how old! And being able to express yourself through the arts is of particular benefit to those with memory loss and dementia.
Let me help you, your friend, or family member find their creative side!

Throughout my 30 years working with seniors I have seen many who believed they were not the least bit creative, go on to become excellent artists. They feel fulfilled, are enjoying a pursuit which creates social opportunities, focus, distraction from pain or anxiety, awareness of the world around them and a sense of purpose. They create joy for others, their families and friends, and a real sense of satisfaction for their lives. How wonderful is that!?

It would be easy to assume however, that a person with dementia has no way of possibly being able to paint or be creative in any way, unless perhaps they have been a creative person throughout their life. Nothing could be further from the truth. Expressing memories and feelings through art can elicit all kinds of emotions, satisfactions and amazing results. Communication ability has changed, so expression through art can give an opportunity for conversation, reminiscence, discussion and fun that wasn’t possible before.
